a rather innocuous little fruit, strawberries are fairly universally loved. Except by people who have allergies.
Today we went to the local fruit market and picked up some fresh fruit and vegetables. Strawberries looked good, so I picked up a pack. We brought everything home, with Lils happily hugging a mango and a banana. [She wouldn't put either down, rather difficult to carry her like that.]
We got home, unpacked everything and I put her in her chair for a snack of banana slices and a strawberry. She plowed through the banana and picked up the berry, looked at it, licked it, then took a big bite. She loved it and proceeded to down it. I was peeling the mango and she started choking.
Turning around to look, I could see her face swelling and I knew it had to be the berry, it was the only thing she'd never had before. I tried really hard not to panic, hyperventilating in the process. I knew her cold medicine would have some amount of antihistamine in it, so I gave her some, got hold of her father and we went to the emergency room.
5 hours later we got home, her fast asleep, her father pissed off at me, her mother in a tizzy and me, just plain worn out.
So, we have liquid antihistamine in the house now, in case she might ingest anything strawberry again.
It does explain a lot, like why she doesn't like pink milk...
