Lack of interest?

Why is it that people don't look up anymore?

I sit on my 4th floor balcony, willing them to look up, but they all trudge along, heads bent to see the next step their feet will take.

They don't even look forward, just down, at the rut they seem to be treading.

When I walk (3 times a week, alternating with the fitness center) I look around. I see the flowers blooming, the chipmunks and squirrels in the trees, the dog I'll have to cross the street to avoid having it sniff me (ugh) and I look up.

I'll walk for blocks, looking up at the clouds. When people see you looking up, they glance to see if you're looking at something interesting, then go back to the hung-head posture when they don't get it.

It makes me sad that they have no sense of wonder, but it does keep people away from me when *I*m walking.
