Chapter 22. In which it was found, just beyond the spring pond.
They climbed the hill behind the pond and Addy showed Zeke where the first cave was. It was a small, almost airless hole that was barely big enough to hold both of them and there was definitely not another opening in any of the walls.
On to the next cave they trudged, through the leaves that were falling in earnest now, as fall shortened the days. The sky was that perfect color of blue that you can only see in autumn, crisp, clear and so blue that looking at it too long could leave you seeing everything else as washed-out. The grasses of the pasture they walked through were losing their last hint of green, dying off or going dormant before winter set in. Squirrels were busy gathering nuts and a weasel was seen scampering away from them, its sable colored coat already showing signs of the brilliant white it would soon be. A small herd of deer bound away as they rounded a bend in the path that went around a hill and led indirectly to the next cave on the list.
Turning on their flashlights they went behind the large sycamore tree that kept the entrance well hidden from casual glances. Just inside they stopped and played the lights over the walls of the cave. It sparkled, just like her cave in Arizona. Addy gasped.
“I don’t remember this, but I suppose it could be that I didn’t have a flashlight this strong that long ago.” She went up to one of the walls an ran her hand over it. Turning her palm up, she shone the light on it. It sparkled too. “I wonder what this stuff is?”
Zeke followed the wall around, feeling for a hidden fissure that might lead to another cavern. Addy watched what he was doing and went in the other direction, doing the same.
