Why truth matters.
(Link from metafilter.com)
Truth and politics separated ways so long ago, if they even ever were close at one time, it's certainly not in my memory.
And y'all know I'm old!
It feels to me like the very definition of truth has changed.
Used to be any lie was a lie regardless of the shades of grey.
And a person was held in high regard who would only speak the truth.
These days you young whippersnappers (and the old whipsnappers as well) are able to let a lie fall from your lips as it were truth.
As long as you don't get caught, it doesn't matter, right?
Whatever happened to having a conscience? Have we all so lost sight of what truth is that it no longer matters? Do you sleep well? Do you have no pangs of guilt when you let yet another lie fall from your pristine lips? Do you teach your child one thing, then do another, or are we now starting from the cradle in teaching them to lie?
How are we ever to raise this country out of the muck it's gotten itself into via the webs of untruths told for years, decades, centuries?
How can we join forces again in spite of the differing dogmas we're all subject to?
That last is something I've been pondering for years. How did a melting pot become a multi-divided dish, where one part can't touch the other without contaminating it?
What happened to us?
